Mr. Darcy is 28 years old, socially well positioned and unmarried when Jane Austin’s Pride and Prejudice begins. Though tall and handsome, he is shy and antisocial. As the novel develops, he overcomes some amount of his excessive pride of birth. At the same time, Elizabeth overcomes some of her prejudiced views as she grows into an insightful woman. Thus the title and theme.
A short time before this job, my husband and I hired a young man, Joe Letteri, to paint our barn. It took some time (as well as imploring from his mother who loved the idea) to cajole Joe into posing as Romeo for an album cover I was illustrating.
I later used the same reference for this portrayal of Jane Austin’s wonderful Mr. Darcy. Joe had a classical, timeless look.
