I loved illustrating John Braine, a British novelist most famous for his first novel, Room at the Top. At the time, I wondered what he thought of me illustrating him in a paisley robe and bright red socks, reclining on a bed. He seemed like the kind of writer who wouldn't mind. I put my favorite coffee mug at his side. (I considered a whiskey glass but, to avoid a likely client correction, opted for the mug.)
Art always is an amalgamation of artist and subject. Somehow, one can never leave oneself out; such separation would require leaving one’s own sense and sensibility behind.
